As Independence Day approaches, I reflect on the rich history we all share here in Frederick. From the battles of the Civil War to the final resting place of Francis Scott Key to the US Army's establishment of Fort Detrick Medical Command, Frederick shares a heritage intertwined with the history and future, of our great nation. Every year, Independence Day reminds me of the freedom and liberty that we hold so dear. As we approach celebrations this Fourth of July, I encourage all Frederick residents to
reflect on what makes our community and our country strong. The Fourth
of July is an important expression of our patriotism.
I wish all of our community a safe and exceptional holiday this year.

Green Team Taps Volunteers for
Tree Canopy Project
|
|
Frederick's Green Initiative Team (GIT) is looking for volunteers to
assist City staff in cataloging every tree in the City limits. City
Sustainability Manager Jenny Willoughby, is currently working on a
project to identify trees and increase the density of the City's tree
canopy. Help is needed from citizens to report trees on private

Initial Work to Begin on East Street Rails to Trails & West Frederick Bicycle Loop
|
|
Work has begun on the initial phase of the East Street Rails with
Trails Project. The initial phase includes street bike lane markings
from East All Saints St./MARC Station up to 7th St. For more

The
West Frederick Bicycle Loop Project includes the installation of
"sharrows" (shared lane markings) and bike route signage on the
following streets: Motter Ave., Bentz St., Center St., Prospect Blvd.,
Braddock Ave., Norva Ave., Kline Blvd., Fairview Ave. & West 12th
St.
Both projects are funded by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Frederick Ransomed! 1864: The Final Invasion
|
|
 On Saturday, July 5th, help "raise" the $200,000 ransom to save Frederick City while enjoying First Saturday's Stars and Stripes
event in downtown Frederick. Begin at the Frederick County Historical
Society where the actual ransom note will be on display and "Raise a
Pint to Frederick" in the adjoining beer garden. The 26th North
Carolina Regimental Brass Band will march through the streets. Gather
in front of Brewers Alley at 8:30 PM
to hear Mayor Randy McClement read the Ransom Receipt - was the town
saved? Afterwards, join Brewers Alley for a celebratory "1864 beer" to
be unveiled and on tap that day.

National Night Out 2014

 Join the Frederick Police Department and neighbors in your community to celebrate National Night Out on Tuesday, August 5th. Family activities are scheduled from 6 - 9 PM at the following locations:

- Hill Street Park - 100 Hill Street
- Mullinix Park - South Bentz Street
- Worman's Mill Community Center - Stoney Creek Lane

Department of Public Works Projects

 Pruning Trees in the Historic District
(NAC 11)
From
now through April, 2015, all 1100 City owned trees in the Downtown
Historic District will be pruned under the supervision of City Arborist
Tom Rippeon.

What's Going on at Carroll Creek Park?
|
|
Work on the next phase of Carroll Creek Park has begun. During the
early phase of the project, visitors may see fencing being installed and
construction trailers. Preliminary site work will also be completed
during this time. Follow the progress at Carroll Creek Park.

Frederick Police Department
|
|
Mayor Randy McClement spoke to the graduates of the 55th Police
Academy at the June 20th graduation ceremony. Congratulations to the
Frederick Police Department's 15 new officers.
Drug Awareness Campaign
The Frederick Police Department Drug Enforcement Unit has been making
monthly presentation to the City NACs on the dangers of heroin. Heroin
usage has increased and is presenting new dangers. For more information,

Crime Prevention Tips
During this time of year, thefts from vehicles have a tendency to
increase. These crimes are often committed by juveniles acting alone or
in groups. To help prevent theft: lock your car doors, report
suspicious activity, remove valuables, park in well-lighted areas, and
install alarm systems.
